Common Redpoll
 
Description: The Common Redpoll is a considered a winter Finche, They breed in northern Canada and are generally only seen in the US in the late fall and early winter when they come as far south as Colorado and North Carolina. They frequently visit backyard feedersand, especially thistle feeders. are extremely social and always moving or fidgetting. The Common Redpoll is a small bird named for its red forehead. It feeds on small branches, often hanging upside down, using its feet to hold food.

Color: The Common Redpoll is pale and brown-streaked with a bright red cap and black chin. The male has pink breast and the female is darker and streakier with little or no red, except on her crown.

Sound: The Common Redpoll’s call is a series of chittering notes with some rising, questioning notes. Calls are "chit chit" and "sweeyeet."

Preferred Environment: The Common Redpoll breeds in open, sub-Arctic coniferous forests and scrub, avoiding dense forests and spends its winters in open woodland and suburban and urban areas.

Nesting Habits: The Common Redpoll's nest consists of twigs and grasses, placed in a bush or on the ground. is The bird nests in a small trees or shrubs. During long Arctic nights, they sleep in snow tunnels to keep warm. They are not very territorial, and you'll see nests occasionally close together.

Food Preference: The Common Redpoll feeds mainly on seeds and buds of trees. It will also consume grasses, weeds, and insects and loves niger, sunflower and suet.

How to Attract the Common Redpoll

During irruption years, Redpolls and other northern finches extend their range southward, adding color at backyard bird feeders where seed is offered. Migratory movements of Redpolls are usually during the day, but individuals may begin to move well before sunrise.
 
Redpolls will readily come to feeders where thistle seeds are offered. About any feeding stations that attract finches will most likely attract Redpolls. Keep the feeders well-stocked with sunflower, safflower, apple slices, suet, millet, peanuts and other fruit.
